Pretending: -는 척

정상인 척 다들 힘 좀 빼

-는 척 after a verb = pretending to do it. 아는 척 / 모르는 척 are everyday phrases.

Pattern: [verb stem] + 는 척

Example: 잘 아는 척하지 마 (stop pretending you know) / 자는 척 (pretending to sleep)

Can't: 못 + verb

눈은 날 못 속여

못 before a verb = can't (ability/circumstance). 속이다 (deceive) with 날 (me) as object.

Pattern: [noun] can't fool [object]

Example: 거짓말은 날 못 속여 (lies can't fool me) / 시간을 속일 수 없어 (you can't cheat time)

Barely: 간신히

정신을 간신히 잡지

간신히 marks a near-miss success: barely held on, barely on time.

Pattern: 간신히 + [verb]

Example: 간신히 잤어 (finally fell asleep) / 간신히 이겼어 (narrowly won)

Doing and then: -다가

-다가 = was doing, then (interrupted): kept seeing me as naive, and got hurt.
