Grammar notes (13)
Imperative -a/eo: direct "do it!"
집중해 좀 더
The -eo/eo ending makes an informal imperative: 집중하다 → 집중해 (Focus!). Add 좀 더 to soften into "a little more".
Pattern: [verb stem] + a/eo = informal command
Example: Wait just a little longer!
Ability negation mot: can't manage it
이유 넌 이해 못 해
못 negates ability or possibility — "can't manage to." Compare 안 이해해 (chooses not to understand) vs 이해 못 해 (unable to understand).
Pattern: [noun] + mot + [verb], or verb stem + mot ha-da
Example: Spicy food? No — I can't eat it.
-n chae: staying in a state
흔들린 채
Attach -ㄴ/-은 채 to a verb to mean "while still in that state": 흔들리다 → 흔들린 채 (still shaking). Often written 흔들린 채로.
Pattern: [verb modifier] + chae(ro) = while remaining in that state
Example: I fell asleep with the door open.
Concessive -ado: even if
무리해도
-아도/어도 concedes: 무리하다 → 무리해도 (even if you push too hard). The song pairs it with Can't touch that — even so, no touching.
Pattern: [verb stem] + a/eodo = even if
Example: However busy you are, you still have to eat.
-ado soyongeopda: useless even if you do
외면해도 소용없지
A set pattern: [verb]-아도 소용없다 = "even doing X is useless." 외면하다 → 외면해도. The -지 ending adds assertive tone (소용없지).
Pattern: [verb] + a-do soyong-eopda = it's useless even if you ~
Example: Regretting is pointless now.
Question word + na: anywhere/everyone
어디서나 거침없어
어디 (where) + 서 (at) + 나 (any) = 어디서나 "wherever." Pattern: 누구나 (anyone), 언제나 (always), 무엇이든 (anything).
Pattern: [question word] + particle + na/deunji = wherever/whoever
Example: That person is popular everywhere.
Future modifier -eul: the one who will ~
이 판을 바꿀 Changer
Verb stem + -ㄹ/-을 modifies a following noun with future meaning: 바꾸다 → 바꿀 Changer (the changer who WILL flip it). Compare past -ㄴ (비친) and present -는 (시작되는).
Pattern: [verb stem] + eul/l + noun = the noun that will ~
Example: There's no way I'll change my mind.
Embedded questions -neunji/inji
알아 적당함이 뭔지
mwonji = 뭐인지 (what it is). 알다 + -는지/인지 introduces embedded questions: 알아 … 뭔지 = I know what ~ is. 모르다 version: 몰라 뭔지.
Pattern: [verb] + neun-ji / [noun] + inji = whether/what
Example: I don't know when he's coming.
-neun cheokhada: pretending
아닌척하지 Yeah
척/체하다 means pretending. 아닌 척하다 = pretend not to be/pretend it isn't. With imperative -지: 아닌척하지 = "quit pretending it isn't."
Pattern: [verb] + neun cheokhada / [adj] + (eu)n cheokhada = pretend to ~
Example: Don't pretend you don't know.
Idiom hanabuteo yeolkkaji: absolutely everything
넌 또 하나부터 열까지
Literally "from one to ten" — idiom for everything, every detail. 부터…까지 also works literally with times/places: 9시부터 5시까지.
Pattern: [noun] + buteo + [noun] + kkaji = from ~ to ~
Example: I worked Monday through Friday.
-a beorida: complete finality
끝나버린 판단
-아/어 버리다 marks complete finality, often with regret or relief: 끝나다 → 끝나버린 (already-over). Here it modifies 판단 (judgment): the call is already made.
Pattern: [verb stem] + a/eo beorida = totally/completely done
Example: I drank all the coffee (oops/gone).
-ji anhda: standard negation
사라지지 않아
Verb stem + 지 않다 is formal negation: 사라지다 → 사라지지 않아 (doesn't disappear). Spoken short forms exist too (안 사라져).
Pattern: [verb stem] + ji anhda = does not ~
Example: Those words won't be forgotten.
-eo gada: continuing forward
만들어갈 History
만들다 + -어 가다 = make it going forward (gradual continuation into the future). With future modifier: 만들어갈 History (history we will go on building).
Pattern: [verb] + eo gada = keep doing toward the future
Example: Let's keep making memories.
7-day study plan
Day 1 — Meet the song & core words
- Listen to Whiplash twice and absorb its sleek bass and cool vibe
- Memorize core words: jipjung focus / iyu reason / sungan moment / gihoe chance / pan game
- Shadow the first chorus line 집중해 좀 더, watching how 집중 sounds
- Skim the vocab list for 10 minutes — just recognizing the shapes is enough today
Day 2 — Commands & negation: chorus shorts
- Say out loud 5×: 집중해 좀 더 / Think fast, feeling the imperative ending
- Learn mot-negation from 이해 못 해 and make three daily sentences with '~ mot hae'
- Compare with 사라지지 않아: how -ji anhda differs from plain an-
- Replay chorus at 00:11–00:22 and read along in sync
Day 3 — Concession & state: -ado and -n chae
- Collect the three -ado examples: murihaedo / dagawado / oemyeonhaedo
- Practice -n chae with 흔들린 채: write two sentences from your own life

- Run one vocab quiz round and note your wrong answers
Day 4 — Modifiers review: past/present/future
- Contrast: kkeutnabeorin pandan (past) / sijakdoeneun sungan (present) / bakkul Changer (future)
