Grammar notes (10)

-ㄴ/은 채 (while keeping a state)

눈부신 하늘에 시선을 가린 채 네 품 안에 안기네

채 attaches after the adnominal (-ㄴ/은) form, meaning 'while maintaining the state after an action'. 가린 채 = with (my gaze) covered — she can't face the temptation directly, yet still sinks into it.

Pattern: [verb-ㄴ/은] + 채 = while keeping the state of…

Example: 눈부신 하늘에 시선을 가린 채 (hiding my gaze under the dazzling sky) / 문을 연 채 나갔어요 (I left with the door open)

-네 (exclamatory: …!)

흐르는 음악에 정신을 뺏긴 채 그대로 빨려 드네

Sentence-final -네 marks a fresh realization or exclamation. 빨려 드네 = '(it just) sucks me in!' — not plain narration but a sigh of 'here I go, falling again'.

Pattern: [verb stem] + -네 = (realizing) …!

Example: 그대로 빨려 드네 (it just sucks me in) / 비가 오네! (It's raining!)

-(으)ㄹ 것 같이 (as if about to…)

숨이 멎을 것 같이

'-(으)ㄹ + 것 + 같이' = 'as if (it) is about to…'. 멎을 것 같이 = as if my breath is about to stop — a hyperbole of being overwhelmed.

Pattern: [verb -(으)ㄹ] + 것 같이 = as if about to…

Example: 숨이 멎을 것 같이 (as if my breath will stop) / 눈물이 날 것 같이 (as if about to cry)

-아/어 버리다 (completion; giving in)

녹아 버릴 것 같이

Auxiliary 버리다 after -아/어 marks an action as fully done or irreversible. 녹아 버릴 = melt away completely — the helplessness of being dissolved by love.

Pattern: [verb-아/어] + 버리다 = to completely…

Example: 녹아 버릴 것 같이 (as if about to melt away) / 숙제를 다 해 버렸어 (I finished all my homework)

-고 (listing/connecting actions)

쉴 틈 없이 빠져들고 이리저리 갖고 놀고

Connective -고 lists actions in sequence: 'fall in, then get toyed with'. The double -고 (빠져들고…놀고) strings the whole helpless process together.

Pattern: [verb stem] + -고 + [verb] = do… and then…

Example: 빠져들고 이리저리 갖고 놀고 (falling in and being toyed with) / 밥을 먹고 학교에 가요 (I eat and go to school)

-고 싶다 (want to) + -니 (because)

위험하니 갖고 싶고 아픔까지 안고 싶고

'-고 싶다' = want to; '-니' = because. 위험하니 갖고 싶고 = because it's dangerous, I want it all the more — the paradox of craving what's risky. Doubled -고 싶고 intensifies the longing.

Pattern: [verb-고] + 싶다 = want to…; [adj/verb-니] = because…

Example: 위험하니 갖고 싶고 (because it's dangerous I want it) / 커피가 마시고 싶어요 (I want to drink coffee)

-(으)니 (once…; because)

결국 너를 품으니 난

-(으)니 marks 'once the first action happens, the next state follows': 품으니 = once I hold you… The sentence trails off at 난 (I), leaving the rest to the listener's imagination.

Pattern: [verb-(으)니] + following = once… then…

Example: 결국 너를 품으니 난 (in the end holding you, I…) / 창문을 여니 바람이 불어요 (When I open the window, the wind blows)

-(으)ㄹ 것만 같이 (as if it'll… any moment)

달려들 것만 같이

'-(으)ㄹ 것 + 만 + 같이' = 'as if it's about to… any second'. The 만 stresses 'just one step away': 달려들 것만 같이 = as if about to lunge — danger right at the door.

Pattern: [verb-(으)ㄹ] + 것만 같이 = as if about to…

Example: 달려들 것만 같이 (as if about to pounce) / 눈이 쏟아질 것만 같아요 (it feels like it could pour any moment)

-(이)라면…-(이)라도 (if… even…)

이게 죄라면 벌이라도 아주 달게 받지

'-(이)라면' = if it is; '-(이)라도' = even if it is. 죄라면 벌이라도 = if this is a sin, even the punishment… — the obsession of giving yourself to something you know is a trap.

Pattern: [noun-(이)라면] + [noun-(이)라도] = if…, even…

Example: 이게 죄라면 벌이라도 받지 (if this is a sin I'll take even the punishment) / 비가 와도 갈 거예요 (I'll go even if it rains)

-ㄴ 듯이 (as if) + 다시 보니 (looking again)

미친 듯이 아름답고 다시 보니 악마 같고

'-ㄴ 듯이' = as if (미친 듯이 = like crazy); '-다 보니' = upon doing, you discover. 다시 보니 = looking again, I realize — beauty and danger are two faces of the same thing.

Pattern: [verb-ㄴ] + 듯이 = as if…; [verb-다] + 보니 = upon doing, realize…

Example: 미친 듯이 아름답고 (beautiful like crazy) / 다시 보니 악마 같고 (looking again, like a devil) / 자꾸 먹다 보니 배불러요 (as I keep eating I get full)
