Grammar notes (13)
Passive verb 열리다 + subject particle -이/가
문이 열려
열리다 is the passive form of 열다 (to open) — the door opens by itself. The subject is marked with -이/가, the Korean subject particle.
Pattern: Noun + 이/가 + passive verb
Example: 문이 열려요 — The door opens.
Possessive particle -의
서로의 존재를 느껴
-의 attaches to a noun to mean “of / ’s”, connecting two nouns — like adding ’s in English.
Pattern: Noun 1 + 의 + Noun 2
Example: 서로의 마음 — each other’s hearts.
Adnominal ending -(으)ㄴ
날 닮은 너 너 누구야
Verb stem + -(으)ㄴ turns a verb into a modifier placed before a noun, describing what kind of thing it is.
Pattern: Verb stem + -(으)ㄴ + noun
Example: 날 닮은 사람 — a person who resembles me.
Topic particle -은/는
사건은 다가와
-은/는 marks the topic of the sentence — “as for…”. It differs from the subject particle -이/가 and highlights what the sentence is about.
Pattern: Noun + 은/는
Example: 사건은 다가와요 — The incident is coming closer.
-아/어 가다 (ongoing change)
거세게 커져가
Verb + -아/어 가다 means an action or state continues onward — “keeps getting more…”. 가다 literally means “to go”.
Pattern: Verb stem + -아/어 가다
Example: 점점 커져가요 — It keeps getting bigger.
-지 못하다 (cannot)
감히 건드리지 못할 걸
-지 못하다 means “cannot do”, stronger and more formal than 안 (not).
Pattern: Verb stem + -지 못하다
Example: 손대지 못해요 — I can’t touch it.
안에서 + 는 → 안에선 (contraction)
지금 내 안에선
안에서 (inside) + topic particle 는 contracts to 안에선 in speech — smoother to sing.
Pattern: Noun + 안에선
Example: 내 안에선 불이 타올라 — A fire burns inside me.
그것을 → 그걸 (contraction)
원초 그걸 찾아
Demonstrative 그것 (that) + object particle 을 contracts to 그걸 in speech — super common in K-POP lyrics.
Pattern: 그것 + 을 → 그걸
Example: 그걸 봐 — Look at that.
-아/어 보다 (try doing)
불러낸 내 우주를 봐 봐
Verb + -아/어 보다 means “try doing”. 봐 봐 literally repeats “look” for emphasis.
Pattern: Verb stem + -아/어 보다
Example: 한번 먹어 봐 — Try it once.
-로부터 (from) + -아/어지다 (passive)
내 모든 세포 별로부터 만들어져
-로부터 marks the source “from…”, and -아/어지다 marks a passive or natural change — together: “made from stars”.
Pattern: Noun + 로부터 + verb + -아/어지다
Example: 별로부터 온 빛 — light that came from a star.
Question ending -나? (pondering)
우린 어디서 왔나
-나? is a question ending with a pondering, reflective tone — common in lyrics and writing.
Pattern: Verb stem + -았/었나?
Example: 우리 어디서 왔나? — Where did we come from?
-지 않다 (negation) + -(으)ㄴ modifier
보이지 않는 힘으로
-지 않다 expresses negation (“not…”); with -(으)ㄴ it becomes an adjective modifying a noun: “not visible” → invisible.
Pattern: Verb stem + -지 않 + 은 + noun
Example: 보이지 않는 손 — an invisible hand.
-(으)ㄹ까? (suggestion / question)
네게 손 내밀어 볼까
-(으)ㄹ까? offers “shall I / shall we…?” — a soft suggestion asking someone’s intent.
Pattern: Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ까?
Example: 같이 갈까? — Shall we go together?
7-day study plan
Day 1 — Meet Supernova: theme & core words
- Listen to the full MV once, feel the beat, and spot the most repeated English line (Su su su Supernova).
- Memorize 5 core words: 재미 (fun), 빛 (light), 문 (door), 너 (you), 지금 (now).
- Repeat “사건은 다가와” 5 times, paying attention to 사건 (incident).
- Tap each word in the word list to hear it, and repeat after it.
Day 2 — Grammar 1: particles -이/가, -은/는, -의, -을/를
- Review “문이 열려”: -이/가 marks the subject. Find other -이/가 spots in the lyrics.
- In “사건은 다가와”, -은/는 marks the topic. How is it different from -이/가? Write down your observation.
- In “서로의 존재”, -의 means “of / ’s”. Make 3 “A의 B” phrases (e.g. 내 마음, my heart).
- Find all -을/를 (object particles) in the lyrics: 존재를, 우주를, 너를.
Day 3 — Grammar 2: verb forms -지 못하다, -아/어 보다, -아/어 가다, -아/어지다
- “감히 건드리지 못할 걸”: -지 못하다 means “cannot”. Make a sentence with 못해요 (“I can’t do it”).
- “불러낸 내 우주를 봐 봐”: -아/어 보다 means “try doing”. Change 봐 봐 to 먹어 봐 (try eating).
- “거세게 커져가”: -아/어 가다 means “keeps getting…”. Use 커져가 to describe the weather getting hot.
- “별로부터 만들어져”: -아/어지다 is passive. Find another -지다 verb in the lyrics.
Day 4 — Reading aloud: sing along with the MV
- Play the MV and sing “Su su su Supernova” 5 times, keeping up with the fast beat.
- “원초 그걸 찾아”: read it slowly 3 times, then speed up and sing along 3 times.
- Record yourself singing a bit of “사건은 다가와 Ah Oh Ay” and listen for rough spots.
- Challenge “내 모든 세포 별로부터 만들어져” — the longest line. Master it!
Day 5 — Dictation: fill in the blanks
- Play the first verse, hide the lyrics, and write down the Korean you hear (재미 좀 볼 / 빛의 Core…).
- Dictate “지금 내 안에선”, check your answer, and write each wrong word 3 times.
- Focus on particles: what do -이/가, -은/는, -의 sound like in the song?
- Dictate “질문은 계속돼” 3 times until you get it right in one go.
Day 6 — Writing from memory: the chorus
- Write the “Su su su Supernova” section from memory (including 원초 그걸 찾아 / 불러낸 내 우주를 봐 봐).
- Write “우린 어디서 왔나” from memory, plus its Chinese and English meanings.
- Write 10 words from memory (빛/문/별/우주/손/힘/지금/너/재미/사건) — all correct to pass.
- Write “네게 손 내밀어 볼까” from memory, watching the spelling of 내밀어.
Day 7 — Review & sentences: put it into action
- Make one sentence each with -지 못하다, -아/어 보다, -아/어 가다 (about your day works).
- Make a sentence with 내 안에선 (inside me), e.g. 내 안에선 꿈이 커져가 (a dream grows inside me).
- Listen to the whole song and sing along, then say your favorite Korean line out loud.
- Final review: skim the word list and grammar overview, tick what’s still shaky, and practice again tomorrow.
