Grammar notes (10)

-ㄴ/은 듯 (as if / seems like)

말투는 멍청한 듯 몸매는 섹시 섹시요

듯 attaches after the adnominal form (-ㄴ/은) of a verb/adjective, meaning 'seems like…'. 멍청한 듯 = seemingly foolish. The second half uses -는 for contrast: my tone is foolish, but my body is sexy.

Pattern: [verb/adj + -ㄴ/은] + 듯 = seems like…

Example: 말투는 멍청한 듯 (my tone seems foolish) / 비가 올 듯 (it looks like rain)

-에 (target / place / time)

철학에 미친 독서광 Self-made woman

The particle -에 marks the target of a feeling/action; it also marks time and place. 미치다 (go crazy) + -에 = 'obsessed with something'. 철학에 미친 = crazy about philosophy. 밤에 (at night), 집에 (at home) use the same -에.

Pattern: [noun] + 에 + verb = at/in/about…

Example: 철학에 미친 (crazy about philosophy) / 여덟 시에 만나요 (meet at 8)

-아/어 버리다 (completely did / ended up)

뒤틀려버린 로렐라이 Don't need no man

-아/어 버리다 marks a completely finished action, often with a sense of finality, regret, or giving up. 뒤틀리다 (twist) → 뒤틀려버린 = completely twisted; + -ㄴ makes it modify the noun. '발가벗겨져 버린' and '깨져버린' use the same pattern.

Pattern: [verb] + -아/어 버리다 = completely did… / ended up…

Example: 뒤틀려버린 로렐라이 (the twisted Lorelei) / 깨져버린 밤 (the shattered night)

못 + -ㄴ대도 (even if one cannot…)

다신 사랑받지 못한대도

못 before a verb means 'cannot'. 사랑받다 (be loved) → 사랑받지 못하다 = cannot be loved. Add -ㄴ대도 (contraction of -다고 해도) = 'even if (they say)…'. The line: even if they say I'll never be loved again, I don't care.

Pattern: [verb-지] 못하다 + -ㄴ대도 = even if (they say) one can't…

Example: 다신 사랑받지 못한대도 (even if I can never be loved again)

-는 (present adnominal: …that does)

야유하는 관객들 You tricked me you're a liar

Verb stem + -는 creates the present adnominal form modifying a noun. 야유하다 (boo) → 야유하는 관객들 = the audience that is booing. 'verb + -는 + noun' is a very common way to describe something happening now.

Pattern: [verb] + -는 + [noun] = …that is doing…

Example: 야유하는 관객들 (the booing audience) / 웃는 얼굴 (a smiling face)

-다면 (if…) + honorific -시-

야한 작품을 기대하셨다면

-다면 (from -다고 하면) means 'if…'. Verb stem + -시- is the honorific. 기대하다 (expect) → 기대하시다 (honorific) → 기대하셨다면 = if you expected. The polite form aimed at the audience makes this a courteous yet cheeky provocation.

Pattern: [verb-았/었] + -다면 = if…

Example: 야한 작품을 기대하셨다면 (if you expected something racy)

-은/는 것 → 건 (the thing is…)

Oh I'm sorry 그딴 건 없어요

것 (thing) with the adnominal -은/는; 것은 contracts to 건 in speech. 그딴 건 = that kind of thing (그딴 is a derogatory 'such'). The irony: the kind of 'nude' you expected simply doesn't exist.

Pattern: [adnominal] + 것은 → 건 = the thing that…

Example: 그딴 건 없어요 (there's nothing like that) / 할 건 해요 (I'll still do what I must)

-과/와 (and / with)

행복과 반비례 평점

-과/와 connects nouns ('and/with'; -과 after a final consonant). 행복과 반비례 = inversely proportional to happiness. The jab: the higher the public's rating, the lower my happiness — rating and happiness are inversely proportional.

Pattern: [noun1] + 과/와 + [noun2] = noun1 and noun2

Example: 행복과 반비례 (inversely proportional to happiness) / 나와 너 (you and me)

까고 말해 (idiom: speak frankly)

까고 말해

까다 (peel open) + -고 + 말해 (say) = 'say it with everything peeled open'. 까놓고 말해(서) is the idiom 'to speak frankly / let's be real'. Right before the chorus: instead of hiding, lay your truth bare. In speech, 까놓고 말해서 = frankly speaking.

Pattern: [verb] + -고 + 말하다 = just say it / be frank

Example: 까고 말해 (say it straight) / 까놓고 말해서 (frankly speaking)

-는 (topic) + -야 (emphatic 'it is')

변태는 너야

-는 marks '변태' as the topic up front; 너 (you) + 이야 contracts to 너야 = 'it's you'. The song's sharpest retort: it flings the 'naked = pervert' label back at the audience — the pervert is you, not me.

Pattern: [noun] + 은/는 + [noun] + 이야/야 = …is (emphatic)

Example: 변태는 너야 (you're the pervert) / 내가 진짜야 (I'm the real one)
