Grammar notes (12)
같애 — colloquial "is like"
저 태양 빨간빛 네 두 볼 같애
같다 ("to be like") in casual speech is often pronounced 같애, meaning "is like." The sun’s red glow is compared to your cheeks.
Pattern: [noun] + 같애/같아 = "is like [noun]"
Example: You’re like an angel → 너는 천사 같아
넌 = contraction of 너+는
It’s dangerous 따끔해 넌 장미 같아
In spoken Korean, noun + topic particle 은/는 is often contracted: 너 + 는 → 넌 (and 너 + 를 → 널). The chorus "I fancy you" is directed at this 넌.
Pattern: noun + 은/는 → contracted (너는 → 넌)
Example: You’re my star → 넌 내 별이야
-지 않아 — negation
괜찮아 조금도 난 겁나지 않아
Verb stem + 지 않다 = "not (do)." 겁나지 않아 = "I’m not scared." 조금도 ("at all") pairs with negation → "not at all." She is fearless about love.
Pattern: [verb stem] + 지 않아 = "not ..."
Example: I’m not afraid → 나는 겁나지 않아
-아/어 imperative
더 세게 꼭 잡아 Take my hand
잡다 ("to grab") + 아 → 잡아 = casual imperative "grab it!" 세게 = strongly, 꼭 = tightly. She tells the one she likes to hold her hand tighter — she makes the first move.
Pattern: [verb stem] + 아/어 = imperative (잡다 → 잡아)
Example: Open the door! → 문을 열어
-(으)ㄹ 거야 — future guess
좀 위험할 거야 더 위험할 거야 Baby
Verb stem + ㄹ/을 거야 (casual form of 거예요) = "will / probably ...". 위험하다 + ㄹ → 위험할 거야 = "it’ll be dangerous." Repeated to tease, "Loving me will be dangerous."
Pattern: [verb stem] + (으)ㄹ 거야 = "will ..."
Example: It will rain tomorrow → 내일 비가 올 거야
-처럼 — "like"
달콤한 초콜릿 아이스크림처럼
Noun + 처럼 = "like ..." for similes. 달콤한 ("sweet") modifies 초콜릿 아이스크림 (chocolate ice cream): "(melting) like sweet chocolate ice cream." The flutter of the heart is compared to sweets.
Pattern: [noun] + 처럼 = "like ..."
Example: Shine like a star → 별처럼 빛나
-(으)ㄴ/는 modifier
깜깜한 우주 속 가장 반짝이는
Adjectives take ㄴ (깜깜하다 → 깜깜한) and verbs take 는 (반짝이다 → 반짝이는) to modify a following noun: "in the pitch-dark universe, the most sparkling (star)." You are the brightest star in the universe.
Pattern: [adjective stem] + ㄴ / [verb stem] + 는 = modifying form
Example: A pretty flower → 예쁜 꽃
아무나 — "anyone"
아무나 원하지 않아
아무나 = "anyone / just anyone"; with the negation 원하지 않아 ("don’t want") it means "I don’t want just anyone" — only you.
Pattern: 아무나 + negation = "not just anyone"
Example: I don’t like just anyone → 아무나 좋아하지 않아
-(으)면 + 어때 — "what if"
누가 먼저 좋아하면 어때
좋아하다 + 면 → 좋아하면 = "if (someone) likes"; -면 어때 = "what if / so what." The line means "So what if someone likes first?" — breaking the rule that girls wait to be liked.
Pattern: [verb stem] + (으)면 어때 = "what if ... / so what"
Example: How about we go together? → 같이 가면 어때
-(으)ㄹ래 — intention
지금 너에게로 갈래
Verb stem + ㄹ래 = casual "I want to / I’ll do ...". 가다 + ㄹ래 → 갈래 = "I’ll go." 너에게로 = "to(ward) you": "Right now, I’m coming to you."
Pattern: [verb stem] + (으)ㄹ래 = "I’ll ..."
Example: I’ll go first → 나 먼저 갈래
못 — "cannot"
매일매일 난 정말 아무것도 못하네 Oh my
못 + verb = "can’t (do)" (inability or circumstances). 아무것도 못하네 = "can’t do anything." 매일매일 = every single day, 정말 = really. Thinking of you makes her unable to do anything.
Pattern: 못 + [verb] = "cannot ..."
Example: I couldn’t eat → 밥을 못 먹었어
-는지 몰라 — "don’t know whether"
어쩌면 좋아 이게 맞는건지 몰라 S.O.S
Verb stem + 는지 = "whether ..."; + 몰라 = "don’t know." 맞는건지 = "whether it’s right." She is so flustered by her feelings that she doesn’t know what to do.
Pattern: [verb stem] + 는지 몰라 = "don’t know whether ..."
Example: I don’t know if he’s coming → 그가 오는지 몰라
