Grammar notes (9)

-니까: Because (reason)

나는 아픈 건 딱 질색이니까

Attach -니까 to a verb/adjective stem to give a reason — the most common "because" in spoken Korean. The song opens by explaining "why": "because I hate being hurt."

Pattern: verb/adjective stem + 니까

Example: 나는 아픈 건 딱 질색이니까 (Because I absolutely hate being hurt)

-도: Also / even

오늘도 아침엔 입에 빵을 물고

-도 after a noun means "also/even," stressing repetition — "today, too." Very common after time words (오늘도) and pronouns (나도).

Pattern: noun + 도

Example: 오늘도 아침엔 입에 빵을 물고 (Today again, bread in my mouth in the morning)

-겠네: Exclamation & hyperbole ("I could die")

피곤해 죽겠네

죽겠네 = 죽다 (to die) + -겠- (guess) + -네 (exclamation). "피곤해 죽겠네" literally means "so tired I'd die" — everyday hyperbole like "dead tired."

Pattern: adjective stem + 죽겠네

Example: 피곤해 죽겠네 (I'm dead tired) / 배고파 죽겠어 (I'm starving)

-ㄴ/은 것 같아: Seems like

뭔가 잊고 온 게 있는 것 같아

것 같다 after a modifier means "seems like...". 잊고 온 게 있는 것 같아 = "it feels like there's something I forgot." Perfect for uncertain feelings — used all the time.

Pattern: verb -ㄴ/은 + 것 같다

Example: 뭔가 잊고 온 게 있는 것 같아 (It feels like there's something I left behind)

-았/었던: Past recollection

평온했던 하늘이 무너지고

Stem + -았/었던 makes a past-recollection modifier: "the sky that HAD been peaceful." Unlike plain past -은, -았/었던 brings the scene back with nostalgia — ballad lyrics love it.

Pattern: stem + 았/었던 + noun

Example: 평온했던 하늘이 무너지고 (The peaceful sky came crashing down)

-ㄹ 것만 같아: Feel like ~ing right now

괜히 이상하게 막 울 것만 같고

것만 같다 is an intensified 것 같다 — the 만 stresses "just about to." 울 것만 같고 = "I could cry any second," stronger and more imminent than -ㄹ 것 같아.

Pattern: verb -ㄹ 것만 같다

Example: 괜히 이상하게 막 울 것만 같고 (For no reason, I feel like I'm about to cry)

-ㄹ 것 같아: I think / probably

그냥 지나치는 게 나을 것 같아

Verb + -ㄹ 것 같다 expresses your own judgment or hunch: 나을 것 같아 = "it'd probably be better." While -ㄴ 것 같아 guesses about the past, -ㄹ 것 같아 looks ahead.

Pattern: verb -ㄹ + 것 같다

Example: 그냥 지나치는 게 나을 것 같아 (I think it's better to just pass by)

-ㄹ까: Shall I? / I wonder

처음 본 순간 뭐라 할까 그립달까

-ㄹ까 after a verb is self-questioning hesitation: 뭐라 할까 = "what should I say?", 그립달까 = "should I call it longing?" Perfect for talking to yourself.

Pattern: verb -ㄹ까?

Example: 처음 본 순간 뭐라 할까 그립달까 (The first moment I saw you — what to say? Is it longing?)

-아/어도: Even if

저녁이 돼도 배고픔까지 까먹고

Stem + -아/어도 means "even if...": 저녁이 돼도 = "even when evening comes." Paired with 까지 ("even"), it stresses "I even forgot hunger itself."

Pattern: stem + 아/어도

Example: 저녁이 돼도 배고픔까지 까먹고 (Even by evening, I've even forgotten my hunger)
