Grammar notes (13)
-a/beorida: completely ~ed (with regret)
식어버린 너의 색은 blue
식다 (cool) + 어 버리다 = 'cooled off (irrevocably)'. The -a beorida ending adds regret or release — a lyric-drama staple.
Pattern: [verb] + -a/beorida
Example: kkamppakhago ijeobeoryeosseo = I blanked and forgot
meongi deulda: to bruise
파랗게 멍이 든 my heart
멍 (bruise) + 이 + 들다 (enter) = to bruise. 파랗게 is the adverb of 파랗다 — Korean uses one word for both 'blue' and the color of a bruise.
Pattern: [noun] + i + deulda
Example: mureupe meongi deureosseo = My knee got bruised
myeot beonigo: over and over
몇 번이고 덧이 나
몇 번 (how many times) + 이고 = 'however many times'. 덧나다 = a wound worsening / re-opening.
Pattern: myeot beonigo + [verb]
Example: myeot beonigo malhaetjana = I've told you so many times
-eo gada: keep ~ing (in progress)
붉게 타오르다 한순간에 식어가
식어 가다 = 'cooling away' — continuous change going forward. Pairs with -eo oda (continuity toward now): 사라져 가는 ('fading away').
Pattern: [verb] + -a/eo gada
Example: bami gipeo ganda = The night deepens
(e)nnaneun deusi: as if to say
언제 그랬냐는 듯이 또 서롤 찾아
그랬냐는 ('saying did that happen?') + 듯이 = a quotative simile: 'as if to say it never happened'. 서롤 = 서로 + 을 (each other, object form).
Pattern: -neun deusi
Example: amu il eoptnaneun deusi useosseo = Smiled as if nothing was wrong
-da haedo: even if (it is said)
돌이킬 수 없다 해도
Plain statement + 해도 = 'even if it's true that~'. 돌이키다 = 돌리다 (turn back) + causative 이키다 = undo, retrieve.
Pattern: [verb] + (e)l su eopda haedo
Example: neujeotda haedo sijak an haneun geotbodan natda = Late is still better than never
ttwieodeulda: to dive into
다시 뛰어들어 난
뛰다 (jump) + 어 + 들다 (enter) = dive into. Works physically and mentally: 일에 뛰어들다 (throw yourself into work).
Pattern: [noun] + e/ro + ttwieodeulda
Example: sae peurojekteue ttwieodeureosseo = I dove into a new project
-a/eodo: even if
식어도 타오르는 얼음 속 불꽃
식다 (cool) + 어도 = 'even if it cools'. 타오르는 is the attributive of 타오르다 (blaze) modifying 불꽃 (flame). Ice-and-fire paradox imagery.
Pattern: [verb] + -a/eodo
Example: biga wado gallae = Even if it rains, I'll go
amu ~do eopsi: without any ~
아무 겁도 없이 뻗어버린 손
아무 (any) + 겁 (fear) + 도 + 없이 = 'without a shred of fear'. The 아무 + 도 + negation pattern is the universal total negation: 아무도 없어 ('nobody's here').
Pattern: amu + [noun] + do eopsi
Example: amu mangseorimdo eopsi malhaesseo = I said it without any hesitation
bakkwida: to be changed
바뀌어 맘의 weather
Passive of 바꾸다 (change something) = 바뀌다 (change by itself). Colloquial 바껴 is everywhere; the full form 바뀌어 appears in lyrics.
Pattern: -gu/chyeo passive
Example: gyehoegi bakkwieosseo = The plan changed
one-word concessive
흔들려도
흔들리다 (be shaken) + 어도 packs the whole concession into one word. The flip side of BUBBLE's 흔들리지 마 — cross-song review point.
Pattern: [verb] + (a/eo)do
Example: millyeowado heundeulliji ana = Even when pushed, I don't waver
-l geol ara: I know (it) will
돌아갈 걸 알아
~ㄹ 걸 (the fact that it will) + 알다 = 'I know it will'. 돌아가다 = 돌아 (back) + 가다 (go) = return.
Pattern: [verb] + -l geol alda
Example: geu mari geojisil geol ara = I know those words were a lie
-gil: hoping that (contracted)
낫지는 않길
~길 contracts ~기를 바라다 ('I hope that'). 낫지는 comes from 낫다 (heal; ㅅ-irregular: 나아/낫지). 'May this wound never heal' — devotion in one line.
Pattern: [verb] + -gil (barada)
Example: haengbokhagil bara = I hope you're happy
